Route: St. Petersburg - Valaam - Valaam - St. Petersburg

Valaam monastery There are Russian monasteries and convents attracting pilgrims from all over the world. These include the Trinity and Sergius Monastery, the Optina Pustyn Monastery and Diveyevo... Valaam occupies a special place on this list.Located in the northern part of Lake Ladoga, 22 kilometers away from the mainland, the archipelago consists of about 50 islands with the total area of 36 square kilometers. The three quarters of this area are occupied by the biggest island of the archipelago - Valaam.

The scenery of the Valaam archipelago is surprisingly beautiful and unique. There are high rocks facing the Ladoga waters, the quiet internal lakes located on the island, the old fir-trees and pines, the gloomy grandeur of the northern nature and the unique architectural ensembles. All these contribute to Valaam being one of the most beautiful islands of the world.

Yet the earthly scenery of these places somewhat reflects the sublime spiritual beauty. Russian Orthodox believers cannot imagine Valaam without its old monastery which was one of the spiritual centers of the Russian Orthodox Church and was often called "the Northern Athos ".

Kizhi Kizhi is picturesque islands and a true wonder on one of them - an architectural ensemble whose fame has reached far over the Karelian boundaries - Kizhi! Both dignity and refinement, power and elegance have interlaced here. This unique architectural ensemble was being created for 176 years (from 1698 till 1874) by the efforts of nameless masters from different generations.

The capital of the Republic Karelia, the town of Petrozavodsk, was founded in 1703. Even the name of the city clangs with the trace of its historical past. It owes its origination to Peter the First having ordered to establish in the mouth of the Lososinka river a cannon foundry which as decided later was named Petrovsky in his honour. The town is located on the picturesque shore of the Onega lake bay. It streches out nearly for 30 kilometres along the Europe's second largest inner water basin. The Onega lake embankment leaves You with the most striking impressions. Here a singular open-air museum came into existence its exposition being introduced by the monuments presented by the seven sister-cities.
