White nights in Saint Petersburg
 |
St Petersburg is famous for its “white nights” in May, June and July when the sun almost never goes down. During that period, many bridges across the Neva River are raised at night to let the ships pass by, a spectacle which many strolling romantics do not want to miss.

According to the calendar summer begins on June, 12 and ends on August, 22.The most exciting time of St. Petersburg's summer is allegorically called White Nights.White Nights last for about a month from the middle of June till the middle of July. During this period streets are not artificially lit at nights, because it does not getdark at all! On the longest day the sun stays in the sky for 19 hours, but even whenit goes under there is enough light for reading. |

Each night at about 2 o'clock all the bridges across the Neva river are raised to let the ships pass, and so traffic is stopped till 5 in the morning.
See the exact raising time schedule for each bridge. |
